The Wild Life

It has been awhile since my last post... but here I am back from hiatus~

Insights from the Wilds of Alaska.... I was going through my pictures and wanted to share this with you all.

It is a wonderful experience to get to see the Humpback Whales so close.  I was filming some Alaska Wild Adventures video with our Sony 1080PHD camera in the bow of our19 foot skiff.  As dangerous as it may seem I have to admit it is a thrilling experience.

Just like any creature, I think that showing fear or nervousness can cause a vibrational reaction from whatever you are coming into contact with.  Every one of my experiences with Whales has been a positive one.  I actually get a feeling of peace from these creatures.  I have had whales approach my boat before out of nowhere.  One time in particular, a mother and calf Humpback Whale came out of their way to look at me.  They breached next to our skiff and looked me directly in the eye.  I was a little spooked or more like surprised, but got a laugh about it after contemplating the encounter.  I realized just as I like to look at them, that they were curious, and were trying to get a look at me.  I am grateful for all of the things I get to see on a daily basis.  From the Whales to the Alaska Wild flowers, every day is filled with beauty.  I believe no matter where we are we should look for the beauty in life.

I started Alaska Woman Consulting to answer any questions you may have about moving, living, or vacationing in Alaska.  With the influx of people moving and vacationing in Alaska, I believe that I can be a very useful source of information.

No Rain No Pain

I would be the last one to complain about sunny weather, that is until I was running extremely low on water for my cabin and garden that is supplied by a rain catchment system.  This last month has been beautiful here on Kodiak Island, even verging what I would consider Hot.  Temperatures in the 70's sun every day.  It was paradise.... But in the back of my mind I was secretly wishing for some rain.  I finally got my wish.  It has been raining for the last 7 days, and even though I have gotten spoiled by all of the sunny hot weather, what a blessing.  Our water holding tanks got filled, my garden is being watered naturally by the sometimes torrential downpours, and I am being reminded of what Alaska really is.  In between the rain and wind we get spells of sun.  Other parts of the state have different ecosystems, such as Fairbanks, which is in the interior.  It is normal for them to be hot and sunny, then they get fiercely cold and dry winters with temperatures into the 30 below zeros.  Burrrr.... I prefer to live in the coastal environment where even though can be unpleasant in the winter with sometimes snowy and cold then all of a sudden rain and wind, but it is what I am comfortable with.  Some people thrive in the interior.  If you like snow machines or dog sleds it is a paradise.  I have heard they have wonderful Northern Light shows in the winter.  I have seen my share of Northern Lights growing up in Southeast Alaska and Kodiak, but it is so different all around the state anywhere you go.  The people, the culture, the attitude, and the environment.  I believe there is something for everyone in Alaska.  There are cities like Anchorage, small quaint towns and little villages of about 300 to 400 people.  Mostly every place has daily Alaska Airlines Jet service where you can easily travel international if you wish.  Alaska is a great state with many opportunities in most fields of work.  If you have ever dreamed about coming to Alaska whether it be on a vacation or a big move I would be happy to talk to you about any questions you may have.  I know a lot of good places and activities that would interest you, and resources to look for work and housing if you are planning a move.  I Love living in the Wilds of Alaska and can consult you on that kind of lifestyle if you are curious!

Living Wild

I know it has been awhile since my last post.  I have been very busy out here in the WILDS OF ALASKA!! I have been outside every day for over a month.  Out here in Kodiak we have had an extraordinary July. It was hot and sunny every day for the last 4 weeks.  Usually I would be the last person to complain about the sun but darn it my garden was very difficult to keep watered.  I had a 55 gallon drum filled with water that I use for watering my fairly small garden plot that measures about 20feet long by 4 feet wide.  Usually it fills up when it rains.. well since it did not rain for about a month it got emptied.  Our cabin uses a rain catch system that fills off of the rain gutters of our quaint little cabin.  I had to start filling my watering buckets inside of the cabin and carrying them out to the garden.  I got it down to about 8 gallons of water a day to barely keep the plants watered. It was so hot and sunny that the dirt dried pretty fast.

We went subsistence Salmon fishing and put up some Sockeys, and caught a few Dolly Varden Trout.  That was a nice treat!  We have been busy in the meantime working on getting our firewood stash as well.  It is quite a feat to get wood from the beaches and put it in the skiff, then haul it to our cabin, cut it up, chop it then carry it up a tall ramp to the wood shed.  Needless to stay living out here keeps a girl busy!

I hope your summer is going well and am looking forward to hearing any questions you may have about living off of the grid, planning a move to Alaska, or your dream vacation, I have a lot of information I can share with you.  Please feel free to find me on Facebook or email me with your comments or questions!  Go to my Website... http://www.alaskawildadventures.tv, and check out my You Tube channel!
